Memories of grandmother's kitchen.

Oak crackles in the kitchen

porridge, thick, hot, bubbly

in pot, atop the stove

a skillet lined with bacon

sizzles, cracks and pops

eggs huddle and jump

close at the skillet's side

dry heat, and country breakfast fixings

fill the room with delectable aromas

my nose twitches with delight

in the oven below

biscuits plump

above the woody heat's orange glow

gray mettle coffee pot in full percolation

symphony for my tongues expectant joy

apple butter full, Mason jar

a feast awaits this country boy

Jon,
How this takes me back to earlier days when I'd wake up and smell such delightful aromas from my Mama's kitchen. My favorite was smelling the coffee perking, it always has and still is a comforting feeling to me. It brings me back to happier times. Loved this, Jon.

Many blessings,
~Linda

Ahhhh...sweet aromas from your and my Grandmother's kitchen, Jon...sweeter are the memories. One addition, please: bacon-drippins in the cast iron skillet, flour, salt, pepper, and fresh milk; makings of a grand creamed-gravy {{sigh}}. I, too, grew up at Grandma's believing bacon came from the smoke house, eggs from the hen house, milk directly from the cow, and flour from 50 lbs. cloth sacks (which would make nice house dresses and the all-important apron! :o) Wonderful memories you've shared (and opened) for us, dear friend!

When kids today wolf their Pop Tarts in their air conditioned homes, they have no idea that you and I have savored the warmth and cookery of a wood stove kitchen. I do think it was better than waking up in a cold, drafty cabin, crawling out of your buffalo robe or quilt to taste the porridge brewing in the iron pot in the fireplace.

Jon, please can I have some, Sir? Beautifully captured with the right detail, eggs "huddle and jump close at the skillet's side" is just so good, and our strongest, most rewarding memories are found in the simplest, purest things.
