To Parley

Ancient ones walked the lands. Can we parley with them in peace?

Chants echo through the valley floor of night

purple ribbons streak across sky's pink blush

the sun grapples for a final hold on the horizon

from atop a mesa my gaze is westward

sage clusters with mesquite and dust

chaparral cocks race from the coyote's howl

night's invaders, poised to strike any prey

the wind carries the spirit

of a lone quenacho's joyous, melancholy song

ancient's spirits swirl among the clouds

I, an intruder into this land

that was their haunt

seek to commune with them

will they welcome my gesture of peace

will they seek to vanquish me

a peace pipe, my ceremonial offering

though my hand and heart are outstretched

I puff alone the smoke rings of parley

is reciprocity not within their reach

or do they wish me ill

slowly I make my retreat to the valley

I meet with no offers for understanding

no outstretched hand of peace

and so, I can only offer them

my release from parley

I can't get the right words to describe this, it really took me away to another place while reading it, as if in another world.

The visuals are stunning Jon Michael, as if the land retained the atmosphere of when the Ancient ones stood proud, and for a moment it shared with you and your offer, but alas...
peace and love to you, Carole~

Jon,

I love the way you set the stage with your opening lines: gorgeous imagery! You take us there, and make us want something to happen, a close encounter ... well done.

(((HUGS))) love and Happy New Year!, Karla.

Jon - Enjoyed To Parley. Love the title and the vivid imagery you use to communicate your effort at reconciliation with the "ancient ones" whose presence you obviously feel. - David

The savages had a way to peace and understanding forged from their dry existence, while the forked tongues only had their greed. Reminds me of the magic of Monument Valley.

But your intentions are honest and seek goodness of reconciliation. Nicely expressed indeed, my friend. Love and peace to you,

Regis
