Journey of the Illusion

The games of politics.

The banks of Washington's Potomac
lie adorned with beauteous cherry trees
their blooms, bright and full
the Woodrow Wilson drawbridge
is opening for river traffic
an immense ship approaches
no larger craft
has ever sailed the Potomac
emblazoned on the war ship's flanks
the ubiquitous name, U.S.S. Illusion
at the helm is admiral Who Cares
Congress and the administration
occupy places of prominence on deck
waving and sneering
as concerned citizens onshore
look on in dismay
the ship's banner proudly proclaims
"Onward To Nationalization And Debt"
suddenly the massive ship shutters to a halt
over the public address system
the President assures everyone
not to worry my fellow Americans
we have all under control
at that moment a huge supply ship arrives
an immense, clear pipe is connected
to the U.S.S. Illusion
as trillions of greenbacks begin to flow

refueling the Illusion
once again the ship lumbers
and moves slowly ahead
bystanders on shore
look on in abject fear
realizing, the Illusion is real

You have so many reviews, You have a great following of people here on Ad. My grandson lives in Washington DC among the illusion and he is getting married in front of the Jefferson Memorial Labor Day weekend Sundsy. I shall be there that weekend and see the sights of Washington DC again as I did in my 20's, my last trip there. I am now 64.

Braavo JOn...Send this to the press, it's fantastic!
You are so on target, it's frightening!God help us all
but mostly please Lord, open the eyes of the congress
we need those checks and balances we're supposed to have!

Eileen

Yes, unfortunately the illusion is now real, but how to stop it, at the least slow it down before it is too late for all...

Be always safe,

Jon,
I don't usually comment on another country's internal affairs but this speaks to all of us no matter where we are. Great, relevant sustained metaphor. Well said, Sir!

Great, Jon. You pulled all the stops on this one.
I suggest you submit it to the Washington Post.
The first three lines made me homeseick for the old town.

Got that right, Jon - they are so removed from reality, it's unreal. Excellent.

Very fitting for the time, the poem really tells the tales of politics. Word play is wonderful.
