In response to Amber's challenge. Albeit very late.

State of Being

balding pate enshrined with salty mane

aging lines mark my features in time

obscuring youth that once dwelt there

acceptance that time shall win, I lose

lament, not as long as Heaven is above

joy and love recollections that soar

above every prominent event in life

family the very core of my existence

purest essence of reward and purpose

without sharing nothing is assigned value

blessed with understanding, endless support

every star I went in search of she provided

the ladder and held it firmly as I climbed

never asking why, always my cheerleader

she led followed pushed or pulled as needed

my wife knew the requirements and was

a partner extraordinaire to share in my success

and now in the years past middle age we savor

each moment with ambitions for our legatees

may they benefit by example their fellow man

have we by our examples instilled love’s criticality

harmony plays well in the heart of every man

diversity is the nourishment for understanding

may their gifts to others be lead by kindness

prince or pauper compassion is an essential

that we are, is by the grace of almighty God

no greater compliment can we receive

than to be remembered often and fondly

when we are no more

Jon,
This is a special piece. You share about yourself in a more obvious way than in most of your writes. I like the moment of solidarity when describing your wife. We can only be so lucky, to find someone willing to believe in us. Lovely write:)

Such a genuine purity in these lines with credit given to the better half. Going through life as a team, as it should be, one complimenting the other with rich rewards of eternal love and family. God bless you my friend as this leaves me speechless...

Be always safe,
Karen

You have touched on the very essence of who we are. Life is short. Most people invest in family and may be remembered thereby. Some choose notoriety and become infamous. The author hopes that words written will not fade on the page, but dance through electronic time, easily Googled in the writer's memory.

What serenity I read in your words of "being", Jon; a serenity that caresses the reader with a "warm fuzzy"! What wonderful expressions of faith, both in God, and one's partner; when one gives, they also receive. Love the "...she provided the ladder and held it firmly...". Yup, good state of being!!

I underscore John Flanagan's excellent review. Jon, you are indeed
a very wise man, and a man of compassion and generosity. I cannot
fully express how appeciation for your concern and efforts on my behalf during my absence from the Den. You and John Flannagan epitomize what friendship is all about. Thank you, my friend. You will be remembered forever, if I have anything to say about it.

This is the work of a poet and a man in touch with what's significant, himself and the world he lives in but knows he will leave some day...without bitterness or regret; acceptance and understanding are the truest roots of wisdom and you, Jon, are a very wise man.
