Written to remind us of what must certainly appear to be insurmountable challenges for the ghetto children.

"Moral Decay Lives There"

apprentice to none master of none

searching my memory’s back roads

skipping stones across the river of life

harmony with the universe I’m seeking

born long ago on the avenue of shame

why papa did I never know your name

forced move to destitution street…bleak

crumbling brick tenements aligned

in daylight the shabby is pronounced

at night horror under dim light plays

each act each scene desperation’s art

cast of malcontents prostitutes, pushers

alleyways death’s entrance, one way

respect moved away decades ago

this city’s pall chokes the life from all

hell’s mall with defeat’s discounts

emotions run naked and course .. words

remorse, friend and love never aloud

theft is an occupational promotion

from starvation pain and fear

justice lies in the gutters unseen

aspirations, guns cars drugs, money

enlightenment unravels only in death

the weary ghetto children, in earth’s hell

Your poem has captured the utter hoplessness of those who live it. Its raw and emotionally charged ! Some do manage to escape ..They are the lucky ones..M

Jon I am so glad I didn't miss this posting!
Your words take us all emotionally (at least for myself)
deeply into life of an impoverishment, not just the Ghetto
or the moral decay of the streets...but I was was most affected
by the emotional impoverishment...and knowing how the longing
feels to find the emotional wealth for any lost child

A perfect description of our neighborhood until 7th grade. Grew up fast. Half, like me, got out. The rest went to prisons like their fathers.

Hope you didn't suffer this--just wrote about it.

You have painted a stark, dark, and sadly very real picture of life for "ghetto children," Jon. Powerful and effective. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Most fitting for today and the dilemma's we now face. Maybe this too is part and parcel of the journey to test the will of mankind and lead us back to the virtues where we came. God bless...

Be always safe,
Karen

...and that harmony with the universe you seek, Jon, is so elusive not because of you but because of the human condition and the vicissitudes of nature and circumstance. Moral decay is everywhere but is there any hope of returning to real values? I doubt it, we've played the 'bad game' too long it's almost impossible to replace it with another default, and not enough give a damn!
Yours is a strong noble voice and I admire its values and virtues.

Tough but brilliant writing, Jon. We obviously need a societal
solution to this hell on earth. Your poweerful poem needs to be
reprinted on the editorial pages of the nation's press. -gene.

Powerful exposé, Jon. Demographics of Moral Decay Lives There can be counted in any given city, state or country. Sometimes it exists, I think, so poets can bring to light the social disgrace and offer a cleaner view for the betterment of society. Be well. Blessed Be.
