The Abyss

My recent encounter with this place was not of pleasant circumstance.

"The Abyss"

from the rim draconian morbidity reins

up and out concepts bleak in the darkness

of tribunal robes and desperation’s veils

at the bottom no light of reference shines

to seek the master of my conscription

would any needs of validity be served ?

will the abyss consume me or will self ?

upon a base of conflict destruction is built

when we struggle groping aimlessly for purpose

in the vast vacant halls of disestablishment

the corridors to tranquil exit are labyrinths

where deception reins in supreme arrogance

as I cry out for solace and self understanding

only a single voice, my voice of agony echoes

where is the love the confidence that once

embraced me, comforted me cradled me

I surely have abandoned it for the mysteries

of a plateau on the plains of misconception

I dwell at the bottom of the abyss and know

it is I that have chosen the wrath of the path

to a place where no man of logic would dwell

mayhem and purgatory could not have conspired

nor built this holding place where life and soul

are held in abeyance, in judgment, this road to perdition

Jon,
A powerful poem! A timeless message. I especially appreciate the part about accepting one's own part in it. Ultimately those are the thoughts that suck us farther into the pit. It's a test of strength to climb out from there. Glad you made it. Hugs,
Sheila

bravisima oh my heart opens wide Jon
the word lover in you is so captivating
your soul pours through and grabs me
this is a wonderful offering although in the
vice grips of darkness...the wristlets of impunity

I had the same reaction that La Belle did, tears streaking down my cheeks, a very dark and emotional filled poem and heartbreaking to read my dear friend...

WE ALL GET DEPRESSED, AS YOU HAVE DESCRIBED WITH SUCH WONDERFUL PHRASES AND IMAGERY...BUT THANK GOD WE KNOW WE CANNOT 'WALLOW' IN ITS 'WELL' TOO LONG...WE'VE GOT TO REACH UP AND BEHOLD THAT '...BEAUTIFUL YELLOW BIRD AND SKY...' OF YOURS...THAT 'LIFTS' AND INSPIRES. WELL DONE, JON AND ENJOYED. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS * FAITH... JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Jon this brought my tears. In the end, all being said, it will be our own voice that surrounds us, hopefully saves us, in that dark place. A brilliant poem.

Jon, marvelous writing, capturing an abyss which is familiar to me
in my recurring dream, which (I'm happy to say) has not visited me
in the past year. These are the lines that grab me:

when we struggle groping aimlessly for purpose
in the vast vacant halls of disestablishment
the corridors to tranquil exit are labyrinths
where deception reins in supreme arrogance

There is a brighter side, of course, and Jon, you have the
skill to capture it. It's who you are.

We must walk the paths that lay ahead of us no matter where they may lead us, sometimes they are smooth and filled with laughter and sunshine and others dark and filled with danger. Nevertheless we find strength in both and learn from both...great write Jon...

the struggle for purpose is indeed a difficult sojourn, especially when the single voice that embraces us, can abandon us at will ... i believe we crossed similar themes tonight ... powerful work, John ...

Poignant poetry and one thing about an abyss is knowing you are in it and still have control to eventually conquer it. God bless you and give you the strength to overcome these dark days. Great poetry

So sad, re-capturing inestimable pain, but in a very well-written poem.
I keep thinking of how so many of the spirtual masters say that the secret of love is dying. Suffering agony ~ that as long as our little stars are visible, the Sun of the world has not appeared. That comes to mind. Maybe you have been shattering egoism to pieces so's you can become the enlightened master, something so rare.
Each of your reviews to any of us seems to contain wisdom to last a lifetime.
Feel better XXX

Bleak and dark, Jon, a soul in pain and crying out,
you're on a wheel of fire here but that you write, and write the
experience so well is testament to courage and life itself.
You're stronger than you think and long may you remain so.

A forbiddingly dark place you describe. I hope I never have to go or dwell there.
