"old melodies"

old melodies play at my conscious borders
on occasion retreating into musty seclusion
cataloged among the residents of my memories

the play of wine, withdrawing afternoon light
disloyal attendants conspiring digression
occasionally I nod submissive to recollection

‘til a breeze summons magic flutes mid the reeds
anew old melodies tiptoe softly into my ear
innocent melodies of my youth conciliating

the taste of yesterday’s wine revisits my tongue
whispering voices of the past accompany each tune
harmony emerges weighty with new meaning

old melodies swaying gently in my porch swing
summer wine and song too long gone, why nod
submissive into slumber when old melodies are playing

Hi Jon, Old melodies always bring back my past memories. Most are from my childhood listening to eight tracks with my dad. He loved music and always had it playing...it's strange how a song will bring you back in time to the exact moment. Love your poem, and I agree an old melody is like a fine wine...Take care, Chessly

Oh yes Jon Michael, those old melodies touch those memories we have tucked away in our minds trunk. They really are like a fine old wine, to be enjoyed in those unexpected moments...This is beautiful writing, one I am keeping.

How wonderful! I love this! It feels like a lazy summer afternoon laden with wafts of an oncoming autumn - a time gone by, a time yet to be. How nostalgic and bittersweet the reflection - transporting us to all those moments we wonder whether we should have paid closer attention to whilst actually "in" them. Lovely work, Jon Michael ~ one of your best.

Music is similar to photo albums bringing back both bitter and sweet memories. Everything we do becomes a future memory, so I guess it's best to make happy and joyful memories.
Deep, always deep is your poetry, teasing out the inherent wisdom of each line.

I TELL YOU, THEY BARGE RIGHT IN...THOSE UNINVITED, PERSISTENT 'OLD MELODIES' HAVE A 'MIND' OF THEIR OWN...BUT, WHEN ENTERTAINED AT THE RIGHT PLACE AND TIME...THEY ARE PRICELESS! A GEM, JON...WELL DONE! THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS & FAITH...

Can't get that song out of my head! You have captured the essence of the sleep process as it draws on the mind to create dreams of our passion. Old memories are the easiest to retrieve and come to the fore. Your words are rich with meaning and sweet to the ear.

"...harmony emerges weighty with new meaning'
that's it, it exactly, for it's never the same
even if what's played is the same the hearing changes,
the mood and interpretation after more understanding
and more experience. Porch, sway, summer wine all part
of setting and memory and pure pleasure in this
fine, fine poem, Jon, My Friend.
This i save.

There is something about music and song lyrics that seemed to hold time and memories in a capsule to be released when we least expect them. Great write Jon.

You are a very musical poet, I hear a slow base sax playing, to the rhythm of your swing, the river slowly rolling by, Magnolia blossoms over your head, is it Gershwin .....Bless ya! Jasmin Horst

What lovely images and sonic elements, and you connect with the reader on a very deep and real level, too.
You've got this one right on and I listen to Frank Sinatra or Ella more often than anything else really, those two great sages :)
(Like you, also a sage!)
