All I Have of Her?

I have written only two poems about my sister, Lois. She lost her life at 5 but she has been with me throughout my life. Her other poem is "Little Miss No Name" and to understand this one, maybe you'd like to read her other poem.

All I Have of Her?

Mother talked about Lois, a little girl that she had lost.
It devastated Mother with what her death had cost.
She had a hole inside her heart that nothing could ever fill.
Mother would never be the same, her heart could never heal.

The only thing I have of Lois, are the dishes in my hutch.
I was never allowed to play with them, nor allowed to touch.
Those dishes are very dear to me, for they keep my sister close.
I pictured Lois playing, and loving them the most.

I always felt I knew her, because of stories I had learned.
She never had her chance at life, she‘d never have her turn.
But if I keep telling all the stories, that my Mother told to me.
My children will do as I have done, that is what I plea.

I realized those dishes, aren’t all I have of her.
I’ve always had her in my heart which makes my spirit purr.
She will forever be with me, sharing my life and soul.
For I know now, without her, I never would be whole.

So there is something I must surely do, to always keep her here.
That’s adding to her collection, in order to feel her near.
Her dishes now fill my cabinet, it was done with love and pride.
For I will always keep them close, and Lois by my side.

Stories and memories repeated to each generation keeps our lost loved ones alive. Each generation should know, and feel, the generations before. You have proven this by..."I always felt I knew her, because of stories I had learned." I think..."You have all of her"...

Beautifully done, Bonnie. You are the keeper of precious memories. Your sister is so beautiful on her picture, with your "Little Miss No Name" poem. Thank you for referring us back to that one, too.
I read once that Jesus is with me, and my loved one is with Jesus, so in that way, we are together.

Love ya, Sis,
Connie

How one measures absence...by deep, by distance, by years? or it is that the abstrac notion of the word absence is like losing of spine? that collection of bones that make us walk tall?
Anbsence is like an abysmal hole, no matter how much snad you pour there..it will never be full.
An extraordinary poem.
