Sometimes you have to sit back and really see what's important in life. I found out through my friend.

Poem Artwork

She Had it All?

She had it all, riches, travel, fancy clothes and toys.
She had everything she wanted, tremendous joys.
Her bedroom was to die for with a watermelon desk.
Filled with many great memories which were the very best.

She celebrated Hanukah and Christmas too.
She received so many presents, when I got a few.
She had the perfect life, with all that she had.
I was happy for her, but at times I would feel sad.

She handed down her old clothes which were new to me.
She was so giving and shared what she had generously.
Deep down I guess my heart sometimes held envy inside.
But now that I’m older, I realize it was just pride.

My parents did the best they could but couldn’t compete.
With the lifestyle they enjoyed for it was so elite.
We played dress-up many times in imaginary towns.
I would wear house dresses, she wore long flowing gowns.

It didn’t matter; they were the best times of my childhood.
Just being with her, always made me feel good.
Years later, she stunned me by saying she always envied me.
For I had what she truly needed,
Love in abundance and pure harmony.

I don't believe my friends envied me and our absence of wealth... but I certainly have seen that I am grateful that I didn't have what they did... Many of my friends who had such wealth growing up ended up chasing dreams with alcohol or immorality and ended up with unhappiness. Even those friends who didn't delve into those things I have since realized, have still had to walk through many difficult trials... some of them weren't prepared for life being so hard and had a much harder time walking through those refining moments of life.

Underneath we aren't so very different.

hAD a childhood friend that wanted to follow me in all I did and had to have anything new I got. We weren't rich and she was 5 years younger than me but she did keep up with me as she was spoiled by her parents as an only child. But we were great friends anyway and i got in touch with her just the other month as I had lost track of her. Friends are nice and nice to get in touch with again too.

...if only the shoes shared...could have dressed up the reality of walking in one anothers also...sizing it up up later...would have found it all so fitting from the very beginning. A true friend is a true fit forever.
excellent write Bonnie...

What an excellent write my friend, I too had a friend like this...when we had an outside toilet, she had indoor plumbing, when I shared a room with my sister, she had a beautiful bedroom with a walk in closet, her mom drove a nice new toyota celica, my mom drove the big old impala! At time I envied her, for she had it all, even the entire set of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys books, her mom was a librarian...but at special holidays, evenings spent with mom at the drive in lounging on a quilt, wading in the creek, I didn't envy anyone...and I too years later found out that she envied me...thank you my friend for this wonderful write and the trip down memory lane! Well done...you've touched me.
Blessings,
Joyce B.
