“In The Beginning”
“In the beginning,” is such a powerful expression indeed.
It’s the creation, the birth, the planting of various seeds.
Like an artist turning a lump of clay into a grand piece of art.
“It is in the beginning,” where all the wonders start.
For the little minds you’re molding are as precious as can be.
They need your special seeds for learning, planted very gently.
It takes an extraordinary person to be there at the start.
It takes a lot of courage and patience but mostly it takes heart.
These little seeds you’ve planted, will root deep and blossom too.
They will flourish in their minds, their hearts, all because of you.
They will take what you have taught them out into this land.
They will never forget their FIRST teacher and the gentle man.
Hats off to you Mr. Sweetland,
You’ve completed your task, Well Done!
Now sit back and enjoy your plantings,
In all our daughters and our sons.

If I were writing it, I would make 2 changes. I would say "it takes a lot of courage and patience, but mostly it takes heart"
And I would say "they would never forget their first teacher, a kind and gentle man"
Of course, I may be looking at it differently than you are, so you have to decide whether these changes would be good, or would change what you are trying to say.
Now that I've said all that, let me say it is a beautiful and touching poem. That first teacher is so vitally important; in fact, every teacher after the first teacher is also vitally important. They can make or break a child by their manner and their interest in each one.
Your poem is one that he will treasure, as you treasure him.
