The Wise and Foolish Man
Our house started to crack; we thought it was just settling in.
So we weren’t too upset when the cracking happened to begin.
But then doors wouldn’t shut or open which was a genuine pain.
We called the builders immediately, and soon the builders came.
“You’re house is built on Bentonite, it’s a soil in the ground.”
“It makes homes lift and shift until they become unsound.”
“This state is noted for it and it’s a down right sin.”
“There’s nothing you can do accept try to put pylons in.”
One day some friends and I were having a cup of tea.
When we heard a colossal crash, and we tried to flee.
None of the doors would open, we were stuck inside.
We had no place to run and found no place to hide.
The sound came from a pole that held up our second floor.
It was lying on the ground, which made our fears all soar.
The builders came to get us out and it was a sight to see.
My friends were quite hysterical to say nothing about me
By this time our house was lifting and shifting all around.
We no longer felt safe at home, for it was no longer sound.
We had no idea what to do, no notion or a clue.
The builders gave no alternative, so we had to sue.
I couldn’t help thinking about the wise and foolish man.
One built his house on rock the other built on sand.
After four years went by, the court ordered them to repair our home.
It cost more than we paid for it, we needed a second loan.
For awhile it settled down and hardly moved at all.
But the cracks and shifting returned with no one else to call.
