Two Tattered Pieces
Telling my little girl that I had to leave her, to go and fight a war.
Tore my heart to shreds, the hardest thing I’ve ever done before.
Those big blue eyes look so much like her mommy’s looking back at me.
Her mommy gave her own life, in my daughter’s delivery.
So it’s just her and me forever, tied with a special kind of bond.
Making it so hard to leave her, since her Mommy’s dead and gone.
The day I told her I had to leave, she was quiet and withdrawn.
She disappeared into her room and she was gone so long.
But when she returned she smiled and smile that touched me deep.
For in her hand she held a heart, with words written, “For my Daddy to keep.”
You have my heart now daddy so handle it with care.
And if you ever need me daddy, my heart will be right there.
I will be fine with grandma and grandpa and I’ll wait for your return.
I looked at her will tearstained eyes, and knew the lessons she would learn.
I promise you my darling, I will keep your heart with me.
I will return as soon as my duties over, my darling you will see.
His broken battered body was found with a little piece paper that tore.
No, her Daddy did not return he was killed in the Iraq war.
He held two tattered pieces of a little heart, tightly in his hand,
One piece went with him, the other buried in the sand.

May God be near and dear to each of our service men and women. May He comfort and bring them courage, and draw them close to His heart of love while they are there.
