Sometimes we don't understand the true value of something until that something touches our hearts.

No One Understood Its Worth

A little girl sat quietly in the back seat, holding tightly to a doll.
She had no idea where they were going, assuming it might be a mall.
She just learned her Mommy and Daddy were killed in a fatal crash.
They knew she would be affected by all the gossip and backlash.

Yesterday she had everything, the security a child needs and the joys.
She had many nannies, two loving parents and a room full of toys.
All of it was gone in a twinkling of an eye, an instant, a quick flash.
When her father drove drunk and they were killed in the crash.

All she had of her past life was in the doll she held in her arms.
It wouldn’t be enough they feared, although the doll had many charms.
The doll Sue, looked exactly like her, curly blonde hair with big blue eyes.
Their right hands shared birthmarks; both shed real tears when they cry.

They pulled up in front of an old dark  building built with black stone.
Leaving the car someone took her arm but she felt totally alone.
She had no idea who these people were who were taking her away.
She knew her life had changed, she knew it when she woke that day.

As they entered the old building, there were children playing outside.
In the dark hall they were met by old man with a woman by his side.
“You don’t have to stay, you can leave", he said, “she will be fine.”
They turned around immediately leaving her & never looked behind.

For years she stayed in that place with her doll, for this was now their home.
If it weren’t for her her dolly Sue, she would have felt totally alone.
Then one day, the angry old man took away her doll as a reprimand.
Never seeing it again, never forgetting Sue, with the birthmark on her hand.

She escaped through books and enjoyed the adventures she had.
But going to bed without Sue was when she became sad.
This little girl was bright; having the strength needed to get through.
She graduated with honors and received many grants too.

This young woman became very successful and extremely affluent in life.
She was generous with charities and helping many people in strife.
People loved and admired her but her close friends were few.
She never forgot the loneliness of her childhood or her little dolly, Sue.

Everything was buzzing at a charity auction that was founded by her firm.
She sat in the back because even after all these years, people still made her squirm.
As she was sitting there feeling exceptionally tired, the auctioneer held up a doll.
It was dreadfully battered, an antique, wrapped in an dirty blue towel.

Chills crept up her old spine for it was Sue on the auctioneer’s stand.
She saw its dull blue eyes, ragged hair but recognized the birthmark on her hand.
One million dollars she bid, people were stunned, not one there understood.
The worth of that old battered doll and they probably never could.

The tears are flowing and my heart just aches for that little girl and the lost doll. I hope this wasn't an experienced story. I hope you made it up. You are a master storyteller, Bonnie. Liz

Bonnie, this is absolutely heart rendering and it brought tears to my eyes. Such a wonderful but sad story. The small girl never walked alone without her tiny doll and I'll bet her lonely nights were filled with love from the doll too. In my heart of hearts, I feel this is a true story and I appreciate you sharing it. A great write.

Dear Bonnie, I agree with Georg M. You are getting to be fine wine like he says. You are so preserved and have such preservations in you head and when you let go and write them, they are better and better. This is a great and beautiful and true write I can believe it happened too.

Funny how in our loneliness we attach ourselves to inanimate objects and they become real to us, a sanctuary where are fears leave us.

Bonnie, everyday that goes by, you are getting finer and finer, like a rare wine that should be poured just in a very special occasion.
