This is for a dear old couple, Pappy and Grammy Nye who I dearly loved.

Empty Chair

Sitting on the porch in their old rocking chairs, grateful for the day ahead.
Thankful for all God’s blessings in their life and for their daily bread.
The couple reflected on the beautiful years gone by and knowing what’s in store.
They knew their days together were numbered, wishing they had just a little bit more.

As they rocked and chatted, many people passed their way.
Always stopping by to say hello and wishing them a wonderful day.
Oh, how the neighbors loved them for they have been here so long.
Hating to think of the time this lovely couple would be gone.

When they were young they built the home and the porch they’re sitting on.
They raised a lot of little ones, which long time since have gone.
They were so active in the neighborhood and left imprints on everyone’s lives.
Now they are old and feeble but still carry on the spark in each others eyes.

They met as children when he pulled her out of a neighborhood stream.
That day he became her hero, they became each other’s dream.
They married right out of high school and from that day were never apart.
Their love only grew stronger embedding each other forever in their hearts.

As I past their house this morning, I couldn’t help all the tears that fell.
For one chair was empty, the one left looked lonely like it had a story to tell.
For her hero passed away last night and for the first time leaving her behind.
Now she sits and rocks alone, with only cherished memories in her mind.

Only one week later that there were two empty chairs sitting alone.
Her heart couldn't take the loneliness so she decided to go home.

Good and emotional write. Came about that I told Kathy last night I might not be here for Steve, my grandson's wedding Oct 3 09, and she said Yes, you will MOther. I wanted it like this between Tom and I but God does not want me yet. As I tell others on den, He will be there waiting at that pearly gate for me whenever??? One of your best writes yet, Bonnie. I have been rereading some or yours too, the older ones. Like rereading your poems and always get more meaning out of them as I read, but only one comment/review for each poem accepted. May you have many more writes and books.

This is a happy poem and a sad poem. the fact that they passed so close together is a God send. They had long lives that they lived well and left a positive mark on others lives. This is the way it should be. Connected through the neighborhood, children. Awesome write. Liz

...to move us back...and forth in your words...emotions creak...and floorboards of the heart...remember the sound of something so beautiful...taken home.

Oh, my goodness, Bonnie, you do like to make people cry! What a wonderful tale of these grandparents. Who wouldn't love to have them for neighbors?
This is a true-blue keeper!

Love,
Connie

Oh Bonnie this is so heartwarming, yet it breaks my heart too. Life is just too short, but it is always what we make of our time that makes it all worth while....

Be always safe,
Karen

Nothing will guard more memories than a rocking chair that lulled more than an infant to sleep with a ear over a beating heart.
