Just a Head

She has a special place in my China Cabinet. I truly love knowing that one time long ago, my great grandmother played with her and loved her as much as I do.

Just a Head
 
I just couldn’t throw it out, no matter what they said.
To me it was beautiful, but to everyone else, it was just an old bisque head.
I found it many years ago in our basement in a little box.
Mom was throwing out old toys, old clothes and socks.
 
Can I have it Mom, for she’s so beautiful and old?
 “You don’t want that old thing, now do as you’re told.”
“I’ve kept it too long as it is, it belonged to my mother’s mom.”
“I don’t even know why I kept it, it’s been here much too long.”
 
“But she’s so lovely Mom, she’s so delicate and small.”
“Please Mom, she belonged to my grandmother who I didn’t know at all.
“There was something about this doll that I loved right away.”
“Please let me keep her Mom,” and Mom finally said okay.
 
For many years where ever we moved, I took her with me.
She always sat on the mantle, where everyone could see.
My children grew to love her, much as I had done.
It was extremely special to my oldest son.
 
He found a doll hospital where we could have a body made.
The lady almost past out, cheeks all flushed, and then started to fade.
“Do you have any idea on this treasure you hold?”
“This doll was made in the 1860’s, she’s priceless and very old.”
 
“I’d be honored to work on her and create a masterpiece.”
“It will take sometime to do, five or six months at least.”
When the call finally came, we picked her up and took her home that day.
To us she was always special but now you should hear what others say.
 
It was just an old head that was going to be thrown away.
A little love turned her priceless, so be careful I'd say.
And don't be so quick to throw out old things.
You have no idea what a little love sometimes brings.

1860's?? WOW!! That was during the Civil War!! Incredible!! EXCELLENT poem about your "treasure"; obviously, she's much more than a head! She's a true masterpiece! VERY well penned, Bonnie; brava!
