Jake is my stepson, and our youngest, the last to fly the coop. He is charming and has a sense of humor like no other and I love him dearly.

Jake’s Ice Puddles

When you live

 in sunny Georgia

It may be difficult

 to remember snow.

Feeling unfamiliar

with icy cold days

In January of your

thirteenth year, I know

When in the car

discussing flakes and

Blustery winds

your school didn’t quite get closed

But you said happily

“We could still see some ice puddles.”

in the car as we drove

Home on clean dry roads

“They hadn’t melted yet

and we had fun cracking them up.

Our feet got cold

but we didn’t care, oh no.”

And I cracked up

behind the wheel

Laughed so hard I could hardly drive

what I all my life had known

As patches of ice…boring term, yes

you brought to life new images

In just two words for me

ice puddles…so cute, and you, so sweet and apropos.
