Beyond the edge of safety
we journeyed
as adventurous children.
Our weary feet carried us
through wooded thickets;
treasures of explorations
sear our eager minds.
Though danger was in our paths,
we feared not.
We were young pioneers
of our own time.
Briers nipped at our youthful legs;
barriers that came into our paths
were challenges that we over came
with quick clever minds.
We were bold, brave and daring,
not easily deterred or swayed.
Giggles and laughter echoed
in the forest, wildlife unseen
scurried to safety as we plowed forward
with our carefree ways.
We approached a clearing,
amazed with saucer eyes of awe
before us was an angel oak
covered with swaying Spanish moss,
its limbs sweeping majestically
to the earths floor.
Our eager bodies raced forward,
never before could we walk
up one tree limb and down another.
Smiles reflected from our faces
as laughter spilled from our lips.
A light breeze from the nearby river
brought aromas of fresh roasted peanuts,
our animated minds had to find the source
from where this delightful smell came.
We found a cottage occupied by slaves years back,
now an old colored woman resided there.
She was delighted by our visit
and gave us a gift of hot roasted peanuts
fresh from an old cast iron stove.
She then led us to a cherished prize
that lay deeper within the forest,
before us stood an old southern plantation
surrounded by majestic angel oaks.
We were astonished,
never had we imaged
so many treasures could be found
from a single adventure.
We realized that our journey
to this magical place
would fill our days to come.

This is a true story of my youth
and my first adventure through the woods,
at the tender age of seven.
Needless to say we spent endless hour playing
at the near by plantation.(Five mile hike.)
Funny thing, our parents never knew.

Married ten years, and more in love than ever, Robert and Marcie have everything to live for. But a terrible secret is breaking Robert's heart: he knows that Marcie is about to die...
Just as life during the pandemic was color-coded with different hues representing different levels of danger, life in its aftermath has become shaded in similar ways. As a self-styled “Seeker of Beauty with Beauty,” (borrowing from a quote by W.E.B.
