One Dead Skunk

A humorous rhyming poem based more or less on a true event.

The Rabies Control Office gets a call.
“We need to see if a skunk was rabid.”
“Does the skunk now have any symptoms at all?”
“No, it’s dead. It was dumb what the skunk did.”

“Okay, I’ll bite. What was so dumb? Tell me.”
“We’re a zoo. The skunk found his way into
an outdoor compound with a chimpanzee;
he was scrounging for food as skunks will do.

“Security cameras caught it all.
The curious chimp went up to the skunk,
who then sprayed a noxious cloud four feet tall.
The chimp got a good whiff; away he shrunk.

“Then the chimp took offense at his new smell.
He grabbed that skunk by his big bushy tail
and proceeded to lift him high and flail
the ground with the poor skunk. This act did fail

“in rendering the skunk unconscious.
Instead, he became annoyed and fought back.
Amidst all this action, a few monstrous
bites were made by the skunk between each whack.

“The mayhem continued unabated
for several minutes until the chimp
finally killed the skunk he now so hated.
We removed the skunk’s body, dead and limp.

“We must determine the rabies danger
for our chimpanzee from this exposure.”
“Well, we have heard stories that are stranger.
Our testing the skunk will provide closure.”

I think it would have gone over better if just an interesting story rather than a poem. Testing both the chimpanzee and the skunk could be quite onerous because it would be so odorous. ;-)

Cute story. Is this truth or fiction?
