nifty little outcroppings
where wings can sit,
one foot perched on wood,
the other tucked under belly,
exotic mouth open to tweet.
crafty display planned
over holidays,
dressing chickadees in streamers,
and they fly,
draping tinsel on water fountains,
overlaying silver on broken water,
most feathers, loosed by playful
cats, plummet to shelves, where
mice play,
dappling clawed fingers
into molt.
each year trumpets roar,
finches flail awkward soot
from rafters as they
try flight in air made heavy with shouts.
quiet times arrive
with afternoon sun,
shafts of golden light
bounce off canaries, now listless,
their cage doors open
for welcome,
sage thoughts tinkling in small brains.
