the intestines plotted
beneath our streets supposed
to bring us the cold and delicious,
the cool liquid heated
to float rubber duckies
in daughters’ bathtubs,
the hot liquid cooled
to quench fires raging
when mothers attack,
their disappointments
finally too hot
to stop,
their hands weapons
to crash and splinter
forgotten desires
for cold, rushing water
shushing them
to heaven
down mountain streams
and into whirlpools.
