it’s dark inside,
when you try to recoil
from words
shouted down the hall.
each shout rankles,
stirs up the primitive,
but being small
makes
a good target,
and being small carries
obligations like a cocked gun.
shooting off your own
mouth seems right,
but the flow
of history entices.
what’s the use
of fighting
back when it takes
so little
to comply?
