the sterile air holds
mischief for magic births;
the slip of molecules shush
the watchers, each a warm
oasis in the fermentation;
while doctors urge
patience, the midnight
hour climbs to vertical
and babies anxious
for the light
gasp air
and scream;
held proudly
by their ankles,
they let mother know
how life excites.
