feet frozen by slush
slither to aisle seats near the back
and the awesome cheer of children’s
voices echoes high above the chancel
beams, wood and strength medieval
attached to glass windows made bold
by saints and crowned heads, pastel
angels nearly invisible
smile and breathe on necks of altar
boys reciting Latin words of praise,
events exciting in their
history boom loud organ notes,
the pulse of birth reborn
each year at midnight
the hour of memories, devotion
and glory in the child.
You've done a masterful job of capturing the sights, sounds, feelings, of midnight mass. I always feel a kind of awe when I go to them, like stepping back in time, somehow.
this was WONDERFUL, Larry, and I've only been to Mass once in my life with a friend. I adore the way you take us into the experience with vivid images, glimpses. The whole is certainly greater than the sum of the parts. Dawn
