mother was a silly creature,
testing our senses each day,
but providing a menu,
as we sat stiffly waiting
for dad to finish his newspaper.
we had our own printed message,
concocted by mother as she
basted the turkey,
finding time for notes
of humorous lore
between soups and salads,
ancient rhymes used
fragrantly, freshly pasted
next to knives and forks.
we mustn’t touch
till dad sits down, ordering his mashed
potatoes from his own paper list,
a special love note
specifying
portion sizes
and whether we can
have carrots,
and when he’ll get a kiss.
