the echoed hall,
more lonely than remembered,
no softness remains,
each visitor tortured by boiled dinner’s smell,
carrots, potatoes, beef;
they leave through unlocked doors,
while captives wait, however,
and you adjust the volume,
opening your mouth to shout
inked notes
from Ibsen, dark, dank despair;
the audience recoils,
each yawn floating criticism
to style, to nuance, and
you, you,
cough the echoes again
to volumes of unopened pamphlets,
a guest speaker demoted
to impotent dancing bear.
I believe that often it is knowing your audience before you speak that is the greatest help. At that point you can adjust your topic to create interest. The subject doesn't usually have to change, but the delivery does. I have seen the same lecture delivered in many ways; sometimes I am enthused and other times I wish I had brought a pillow and blanket. Excellent write, Larry.
Take care,
Sherry
Sometimes the styles and the structures spoil one's feelings relating to the authors. How one poem is read and be interpreted in so many ways! I do need to shout my grieves out, not the structure.
