each snap-brimmed hat
protects against the rain,
the lines of hats
busy, purposeful,
the dark trench coats laced to ears,
hats pulled way down,
only slits of eyes reveal the pain,
one moment all are
chewing gum, posing to the left,
posing to the right,
the next they laugh, hats falling
in puddles, paychecks
stuffed in their ears.
but they wait, hats
again snapped down tightly,
lips pursed, holy beads
in their pockets,
lips begin to move,
each prayer lifted skyward,
each drop of rain
a promise for tomorrow.
