Conscious But Numb the due date pulsed with rhythm and fog spilled over dandelions, the entire backyard full of craters. night’s glow hummed, energy commanded the lady bugs to wake, not one flying now, just hanging from blooms, bedding down. most neighbors shuddered, counted their memories, the deep white fog not lifting yet, the early morning factory whistle ready to pop. but cars cranked up, coughed, and workers slipped inside, checking for mice. early spring was like this then in Ohio, no one ready for super highways, no one itching for a fight.
