by rhythm through microscopic
ballet, fermenting in jazzed-up
drinks at country clubs.
yet motion seemed imminent, seemed
somehow good, a way to lessen
the harmful effects of lifting weights
or running up hills.
teacher quite plump,
his leotards deepest black, his hair
a pompadour masterpiece (we took
to calling him Trump behind his
bulky butt).
but music we got, and motion,
some Ellington one morning, and
Charlie Parker on Sunday after
church, the women whispering
together about teenage drug abuse (for shame!).
pounds lost minimal,
a minus only projected in brochures,
the muscle tone seemed real,
and Trumpy (by now a trendy
name was vetted) truly worked us;
we had blue martinis, blue hair,
and blue cheese hors d’ oeuvres
for graduation day.
