a dog walking by the
side of some road, you
too busy licking a chocolate
Dum-Dum to care,
your bare feet
out the window, your eyes
somewhere else.
always somewhere else, some other
guy, some other party, the one
you’re goin’ to not on your
mind, and your gaze catching
moonlight as the car stops
at the drive-in.
what do you want?
some fool like dumb Jed
and his friend dumber, some
hockey guy skating each night
to The Eagles at the rink,
passing you by, then returning
for a kiss?
listen: no one pays attention
to a sleepwalker until
she steps inside your dream.
I don’t mind the ashes
or the bare feet. Just give me
a look, and take my hand.
