it was hours before
I noticed you were gone, the pistol
empty-chambered, your lipstick
still clinging to your cigarette
like possum-glue on the heat-dead
cement.
numbers flew in circles above
my head, like cartoon mischief
from a coyote’s breath.
I counted ten more times, washed
my hair, took a good long
time with a beer,
the front porch swing
rusty-squeaking
as the north wind brought
lightning, a rumble picking up
speed across the plains.
