big rig motionless
or so it seemed
the trailer knocking against
the empty space between
white lines and oblivion.
moments ago your foot
flayed out the window,
wind spreading toes
like orange slices
on a plate.
trucker motioned slow down
curve ahead, bumping noises
filling the passing lane.
skidding cargo, lost or flung
chairs flip-flopped over,
crossing the berm, entering
the void.
the quiet brake soothed cement,
arm-twisting the steering wheel
wrenched away the bulky freight,
and you ended up
in my lap, our car
backwards,
oncoming traffic whizzing by.
Thank God for truckers. My life and those of others in my family have been saved many times by their skill. This was a hairy one!
