I’ll Wait front porch swings move in the evening breeze, another car meanders toward town, and your truck doesn’t. another beer cools my hand, and the pretzels feel stale on my tongue. the street lights pop out, and the shadows deepen. your face does not light up the quiet mood. pacing seems to help, at least the motion exercises my depths, and some memories pulse. if only words returned to senders like black birds to the cottonwoods, if only hawks spared baby chipmunks and sped home to roost.
