Those dimples laced with irony,
those bull shoulders, pushing
always pushing forward, making
contact with flesh, almost punishing each new
contact with a fever to begin,
to stage a blood-letting,
to rock the souls inside,
crowd waving, gesturing, looking
for the quick punch, the surge
of revenge, a moment
when a smile would tear anyone down,
so confident in power that no one,
no one, could remember a single phrase
of victory, the mouth open, hoarse
in victory, the silence
of early film a gesture only,
a feeling of triumph.
