summer dog days bring prayers from most
old folks, their lips quivering in heat
too strong for rotating fans.
they soon drink water, inching the thick
water-filled tumblers to their open mouths,
gargling life into esophagi tightened
by gout.
no more do cough drops’ strong menthol
taste soothes these throats, the Great
Depression was years ago
and Roosevelt’s promise of security
has been squelched, the right-wing politicians
itching for Social Security moneys, hoping
for private payments to insurance companies.
little spirit now for rebellion, these
attenuated antiques sit stoically while
temperatures soar, their independent
lifestyles threatened by false economies,
their feeble bodies eager for the after-life
where down-below vicious bankers will be
forced to watch “It’s a Wonderful Life”
until the cock crows thrice.
