Penned after reading that in Missouri alone housecats kill over 500,000 songbirds each year just for sport, while naive owners allow the carnage to continue. Cats kill for the sport, not for food. And they kill and kill all night long while their owners sleep. Wonder why you don't hear many songbirds lately?
Killer Cat
outside home, his claws
enter new dimensions where
pussy cat runways remain irrelevant.
his meek owner allows
cutting fashion, believing
cats need blood to hone
the stylish beast.
each night he plies a deadly trade,
his urge to kill overwhelming,
irresistible, and his flashing paws
take on the fashion world.
baby birds in nests, a salvo of
panting chipmunks, a garnish of
tiny sea urchins to wrap his psyche
in ocean’s salty mix.
none are spared, and he licks
blood off his toes, flashing the gleaming
nails for practice, stiletto style,
stalking the sand dunes of
Carolina beach.
I make my cat stay indoors at night. Although I know he needs excercise, I just couldn't handle the idea of him killing baby animals. I woke one morning to find two infant rabbits on my porch. From that time forward he has not been allowed outside without someone at watch.
Great message here.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
Great message here.
