Wild screaming awoke us, the dawn light
Bursting through grimy windows, our stay in camp
Splintered now by fear.
The dark cabin shook with terror and Millicent’s cries
Startled us awake, no person moving yet,
But heartbeats bubbled to the surface
Leaving an acid taste on tongues.
Her bed was vacant but our eyes found
Much to fear, the covers alive with primitive
Creatures of gray wiggling down the mattress
And spilling over its sides.
Millicent’s horrifying shouts retreated
Down the dirt road toward town,
Her clothes
Still hanging neatly in the closet.
