Some fight the urge all their
Academic lives, that urge so strong
To bolt, to sidle out the door,
To leave the umbrella behind, turn your back
On ancient practice, forbid the gods
To wonder why.
That door seems perpetually closed, or if
Opened, seems to slam backwards onto
Fingers seeking escape.
Each desk is marked by fingerprints
Of the eager, most clicking on wristwatches, or
Drumming ineffectually on torn loose-leaf
Paper, names scribbled on top, often
Illegible writing smeared by mickey-dees’
French fries hidden below for snacks
When lectures seem to drone.
No wonder the open hallways call, classes
Still in session, some lonely students
Propped up behind works of art,
Cold eyes blankly wondering, no books to read
But texts.
