Over the river and through gates
The horses ride and our imagination
Seeks truth.
The water still rushes and blooms
Follow, their rustic yellows,
Their rare reds and the almost surreal
Magentas caress the watermelons.
Occasionally, the horses pause, lift
A hoof and nod, as if it all
Makes some sense, as if they know
Exactly where we’ve been and
Where we’re going.
Shaking their heads, they strike
The turf lightly, they bolt, off again
Trying treason in a moment, their
Lathery sides heaving
With workmanlike fever,
The goal seen in a dream.
