who decided, when and why
did the stores come down, each cubicle
filled now with sticks,
the stuff of failure, but the mall
remains, each hallway glimmering,
the lone janitor pushing memories
away at Christmas, the echo
bringing carols from 1993,
the broken Santa smiling,
toothless gums painted
with soot, and elderly walkers
slipping by Victoria who has
no secrets now, she’s empty
to the core.
