out of bed early she jumps, does pirouettes over
dandelions, remembering to bow
after each completed dance,
her hair ratted from sleep.
practicing the contest ritual,
her feet bare in the wet grass,
the sun a faint purple-red surrounded
by a halo of dark night.
if she thinks, she stops, erasing
belief systems from her ancient brain,
trying to be free, the effort exact as she
forgets, her hands just so
when the baton drops.
her whirls contrast with the quiet streets,
where, eager for the light,
early workers creep out to gas stations,
and then her pretty lips mouth
the haunting beat of drums and her eyes see
lines so parade-perfect she hums.
