Old School
very old school here, even some carriages
plunking down iron-clad feet, the couples
sniffing the night air, their kisses
smacking loudly in the fog.
stumble and you’re lost, another
world of periwigs and cloistered nuns,
each one praying for your soul.
cross the street and you’re near the bar,
a welcoming sound inside, some band
warming up on 1940s songs, a tune
will perk you up, you need a drink.
who said a seat would be empty? losers seek
but can’t find, so belly to the bar,
see if you can get attention, lay your coins
down, cough, hope the bartender hears.
no one sees you, knows your story, no one shakes your
hand, best to slump in your seat, drink up,
the soldier boys will be in soon,
you can’t fight them, drink and get out,
no one will mind.
