on the highway again,
heading south, letting my thoughts
play with the green wheat fields
and the joyous golden finches flitting
through the meadows.
but the breezes told me another story,
the replay in my brain seeing those
final days, the notes not returned,
the phone calls ringing into the night,
the last picnic when you didn’t
show up.
each year I’ve set aside some time to travel
this route again, the past becoming so fresh
I hear your voice, I see you
on the porch, your face so alive
to life and to me.
