Cancel what you’re doing
And return to scenes where
Coffee cups break
And neo-effects dominate
The sun, it rises,
It falls, but handshakes
Grow meaningless
And dog-eared books are
Thrown out with
The trash.
Remember the sainted days
When church-goers dominated,
Their silent misfortune
Rated a plus, their
Rental halls filled
With holy sacraments purloined
From ancient gods who
Mated with anyone, creating
Demi-gods to be worshipped
Before lunch, the coffee
Cups from Starbucks.
A fantasy then, with
Most brewed in homes or
In bakeries offering donuts
And croissants, the mixed-up
World of no marriages, no
Humans on porches, no
Humans except those, now,
Poised in front of televisions
Waiting for entertainment
That spoiled all earthly
Pleasures, and human conduct
Included only trite phrases
And mouthed platitudes.
