Old Friends Die
While memory grasps at faces,
The crowds of people at the malls,
Not one looks familiar
Though many say hello.
Years become ancient and fools
Dance down aisles, their
Hope for more effervesces
And likenesses blur.
Like gap-toothed smiles,
These friends seem skewed,
Where collegial greetings
Multiplied, now just
Scars are viewed.
John and Mary,
Phil and Joan,
Those faces loved
And cherished,
Appear in newsprint
Obituaries,
Simply constructions
In concrete.
