One can learn from an actress
Even now, offstage,
when she ponders our lives
Here in the States from afar.
In an interview, her picture of us
Over here changed by life
Over there.
She found the British more
Thoughtful, less prone to hate,
More prone to talk, to sit,
To think about life.
Her eyes opened to us,
The USA, our habits, our
Longing for the next thing,
Always the next thing,
Not thinking about now,
And our place in the now,
But speeding along,
Complaining about speed bumps.
They slow us down, those
Visits with old aunts
And uncles, those mid-afternoon
Teas, they slow us down
On our race to oblivion,
She said that’s the way
We were.
She hoped we could change,
But she didn’t think we would,
Being too much in love
With speed.
