ancient gods were
so delightful,
stopping on earth
for trysts,
throwing thunderbolts
at dolts,
raising havoc
during competitions
with other gods.
so imaginative were they.
not like the new gods,
so serious,
so threatening,
so easy to take offense,
rule-bound,
dangerous
and oh so solemn,
as if all the fun
had been drained
out of their invention
--cancer.
