not much time, shadow
slides by, moments only
to escape, heart rate
bubbling inside, yet wings
take off, propelling
wild flight, beady eyes scared,
observing, sensing, but not
looking, and the crash
is abrupt, a full flight
collision with the car door,
bird imprint in fluff,
in feathers, the wing span wide,
the beak broken-off, bird image
captured like a photo on glistening
steel, but the hawk slide-swoops,
lands car-top, looks at itself
in the window, gives it one peck,
then hops talons first, grips
dying bird, and rips it to shreds,
leaving only light-weight feathers
to blow away in the breeze.
