broken bones
abrupt departure
from norm.
gravity and speed
give unpleasant
hints of doom, a date
with skin scrapes,
a neck brace,
a broken hip.
so we think cushioning,
ways to pillow falls,
soften collisions
with windshields,
sidewalks, other people.
we think like eggs,
if they could think,
if they could spread
pillows, place mattresses,
engineer feathers
to lie still.
as eggs fall off fences,
breaking yolks too messy
to clean up.
