False Christianity

most shuffled in,
waiting, drinking coffee
gathered from across
the street.

a varied group, some
obviously professors,
some young housewives,
a few old, yet
distinguished.

no hush when the speaker
strolled to the front,
he shook hands, smiling,
almost a politician.

and his voice was firm,
his gray hair parted
on the left, but
his book, as we all
knew, carried a right
wing message
no taxes
no help for kids
no infra-structure
proposals.

The Chapel Hill
groupies booed, stamped feet,
and the guest,
red-faced,
yelled vulgar
four-letter words, not
winsome for an anxiously
scripted Christian.
