An eerie silence hangs in the air
Hideous traffic everywhere
Why in a hurry this time of year?
Folks pumped up with holiday cheer
Some prefer to pause and reflect
Of the year’s passing with some regret

Resolutions come and go
Well meaning but we all know
Next year will remain about the same
More war, violence, and politicians shamed
Our world spins in elliptical flight
While people live linear and trite

What’s so special about the year’s last day?
Pundits and celebrities have their say
But for common folk it’s a time to ponder
Why people procrastinate and choose to wander
Aimlessly through life without basic tenets and beliefs
Consume our resources beyond relief

My challenge for us is to relive the past
As the Good Book says could be our last
Welcome your neighbor and care for the sick
Wish no harm and don’t be too quick
To judge others harshly if they stray
For there will be a time on His last day
